Formatting, Resizing, and Optimizing Pictures for the Web

1) To upload a picture to the e-Classifieds it must first be saved on your computer. (Scanned in, downloaded from a digital camera, or other.)

2) Secondly, it must be within the following limits:

File Format - Only .gif or .jpeg pictures can be uploaded
Picture Size - Limit is 230 X 230 pixels (Approx. 3 inches X 3 inches)
File Size - Limit of 50 kb
An error message will result if your picture is outside any of these limits.

Reasons these limits are in place:

The main reason is for acceptable image download times to your viewers. An image which has a file size of 50 kb can take up to 20 seconds to appear for a viewer with a slow modem connection. Anything beyond this would result in losing viewers for your ad.
In addition, numerous huge pictures stored on the webserver could eventually cause slowdowns or other problems in the program.

File Format: .gif and .jpeg are the standard types of pictures shown on the web. The main reason for this is they use "compression" and come in smaller files this way so they can be downloaded much more quickly than pictures in different formats (such as .bmp).
Pictures saved in most other formats would have much too large a file size.

Picture Size: Smaller sized pictures help make the file size smaller and add consistency to the program format.

How to Check the File Format and File Size of your picture: 1) One way to do this is first navigate on your computer to the place the particular file is saved.
In the example below you will see two files - one is called lake.JPG (This is in a correct .jpeg format), and the other is lake.BMP (BMP is called bitmap format and is too inefficient for web pictures)

2) Next, right-click (Windows) on the icon for your picture and click on "Properties" at the bottom. (See picture below)

A box will come up which shows the file format and File Size (Shown by the red arrows below).

You can also check for the file size and dimensions of a picture by right-clicking on the actual picture and clicking on "Properties". Do it on the picture below and you should see its file size is 10590 kb and its dimensions to be 350 x 234 pixels.

If the file format, picture size, or file size of the picture you wish to include with your ad exceeds the limits, you may need image-editing software to optimize it yourself.
